Best School Cowinner - Gasson Hall, Chestnut Hill, Mass.
This historic school building originally built in 1913 has been the unfortunate victim of severe weathering after close to 100 years of exposure to the harsh New England climate. The damage was so severe that portions of the original cast stone began to fail. A decision had to be made on what to do about the buildings failing exterior. The school chose to break new ground and replace all of the original cast stone with new matching precast concrete stone. This would ultimately become the largest cast-stone-restoration project ever undertaken in North America. The process began with surveying specialists rapelling down the structure with handheld computers. Next came 11 months of mold and pattern creation followed by 14 months of careful installation. It is difficult to overstate the complexity involved in faithfully replicating the appearance of the original cast stone details on this building. To compensate for the loss of detail due to weathering, each original cast unit had to be refinished by hand to simulate its original appearance for mold making. A concerted effort was made to engineer a durable mixture that would not weather in the same manner as the original units. Because of the restrictive jobsite and the delicate nature of each stone, each piece was delivered in a careful, just-in-time fashion, which involved careful tracking of each of the 3300 pieces. This hospital residence center was built to provide a place for families to stay and remain emotional and physically involved in the rehabilitation of family members who have suffered catastrophic spinal injury. The project attempted to maximize accessibility as well as take the not-for-profit hospitals limited budget as far as possible. Pivotal to this was the use of precast concrete, which did more than just save money and allow the expansion of services; in this project, it allowed the architect to establish a new design language. Beginning with the buildings southeast corner, an interesting geometric pattern formed in glass and precast concrete causes the observer to leave the repetition behind and focus instead on the interplay of tessellated rectangular forms. This geometric play continues as one follows the buildings exterior across the east face. Attached to the base of each window pair is a precast geometric form that makes the observer question its true nature and the scale of the window units themselves. Back in early June (2010), when crews began working to remove the mound of earthen fill on vacant acreage just west of the Turkey Hill convenience store – off the Sanatoga interchange of US Route 422 – passers-by noticed and asked about concrete drainage pipes that were deposited on the property. After several weeks of grading, the pipes disappeared from public view. They didn’t simply vanish, of course. They were used, as planned, underground as part of a drainage retention basin approved for the property at 3049 E. High St., Pottstown PA, by Lower Pottsgrove Township.

This seemed like a pretty small chamber for 21000 pounds. I actually was able to lift it clear of the ground without any problem, but the chains were cracking the sides of the chamber, so we used two machines to avoid further damage.

MEKPAPAN is MEKP-AP-AN. Warning : AP and MEKP are dangerous. It was dumb to make these explosives. They can explode for no reason. I put the explosive in the casserole and pressed hard. I thought 1,5 kg would fit in it, but ended up with 2 kg.
