PCI Sustainability Case Study: HOK Headquarters

PCI Sustainability Case Study: HOK Headquarters

HOKs headquarters in Kansas City, MO, is meant to model the firms commitment to innovative and sustainable design. Not only is the building set in an urban environment, on a small footprint that does not add contributions to the heat island effect, but it also uses natural materials such as precast concrete and nearby resources to demonstrate their effectiveness as green building systems.

Tetrapod Evolution 2of5

Tetrapod Evolution 2of5

Tetrapods are vertebrate animals having four feet, legs or leglike appendages. Amphibians, reptiles, dinosaurs/birds, and mammals are all tetrapods, and even the limbless snakes and whales are tetrapods by descent. The earliest tetrapods radiated from the Sarcopterygii, or lobe-finned fish, into air-breathing amphibians. The first tetrapods are now thought to have evolved in shallow and swampy freshwater habitats, towards the end of the Devonian, a little more than 365 million years ago. This documentary walks through our early understanding and discoveries regarding the evolution of tetrapods. The list of known fossils possessing transitional features continues to grow. Osteolepis, Eusthenopteron, Sterropterygion, Panderichthys, Elpistostega, Tiktaalik, Elginerpeton, Densignathus, Ventastega, Metaxygnathus, Obruchevichthys, Hynerpeton, Acanthostega, Ichthyostega, Whatcheeria, Tulerpeton, Pederpes, Greerepton, Crassigyrinus, Pholidogaster, Pteroplax, Baphetes, Balnerpeton, Dendrepton, Silvanerpeton, Proteogryinus, Eoherpeton Every home should have the Animal Planet channel www.youtube.com

News Update: Brooklyn Bridge to Get $10M Makeover

LB Foster Company (NASDAQ:FSTR) was awarded a $10 million contract to provide new road way decking and bridge railing for the Brooklyn and Manhattan approach ramps for the Brooklyn Bridge. The contract includes about 170000 square feet of steel grid deck and 13000 linear feet of steel railing. Don Foster, Senior Vice President, LB Foster Construction Products noted, “Steel grid decking offers efficient installation, long-term performance and low life cycle costs over competing products,” The grid decking reinforces the precast concrete to form a composite material that takes advantage of the best properties of both the concrete and steel. Concrete will be precast into these complex panels by a separate supplier and the panels will be shipped to the site ready to install. The contract will be partially funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. LB Foster Company iscurrently trading 0.07 percent lower at $28.95. SmarTrend currently has LB Foster in an uptrend. Since 2008, SmarTrend subscribers trading LB Foster using our alerts outperformed the stock by 21%. We are monitoring these developments and will alert subscribers to any change in trend.

Iowa Concrete Products-YouTube sharing.mov

Iowa Concrete Products-YouTube sharing.mov

Iowa Concrete Products Company A part of Maquoketa since 1926. Frank Regner started constructing concrete burial vaults in Monmouth, Iowa in 1919. The manufacturing plant was located on the same street as Regner’s home. Frank’s son, Franklin later joined the Regner business and helped to carry it on. In 1952 the Regner and Son business was sold to two brothers, John and Donald Hoffman. At that time, the present business name, Iowa Concrete Products, was adopted. Soon after assuming ownership, the brothers moved to the present location of the business on highway 64 West and constructed the original building. Don left the partnership and John became the sole owner until the business was sold to Betty Franklin in 1962. While the Hoffman’s owned the business, they expanded the operation by manufacturing various sizes of septic tanks. It was during the ownership of the Franklins that the firm again expanded its product line by manufacturing agricultural products, such as various sizes of feed bunkers. In 1984 Olin Quissell and Barry Francois formed a partnership and decided to purchase the company. Various liners are now offered for the concrete burial vaults, including liners made of copper, fiberglass, stainless steel, and polished styrene. Now the firm is a distributor and sales-agency for the monument line of the JP Vincent & Son Company of Galena, Illinois. In 1987 the Francois share of the business was purchased by Mr. Quissell and he is now the sole owner. Olin

Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Sunshine Skyway Bridge

www.fpcaweb.org… The Sunshine Skyway Bridge, spanning Florida’s Tampa Bay, is the world’s fifth largest cable-stay bridge with longest cable-stayed main span, with a length of 29040 feet (exactly 5.5 miles or approximately 8.85 km). It is part of I-275 (SR 93) and US 19 (SR 55), connecting St. Petersburg in Pinellas County and Terra Ceia in Manatee County, Florida, passing through Hillsborough County waters. Construction of the current bridge began in 1982, and the completed bridge was dedicated on February 7, 1987. The new bridge cost $244 million to build, and was opened to traffic on April 20, 1987. It is constructed of steel and concrete. Twenty-one steel cables clad in nine-inch steel tubes along the center line of the bridge support the structure. It was designed by the Figg & Muller Engineering Group, and built by the American Bridge Company. In November 2005, an act of Florida Legislature officially named the current bridge the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge, after the Governor of Florida who presided over its design and most of its construction. According to sources, he was inspired to suggest the current design by a visit to France, where he saw a similar cable-stayed bridge. The original bridge was dedicated to state engineer William E Dean, as noted on a plaque displayed at the south rest area of the bridge. The Travel Channel rated the Sunshine Skyway #3 in its special on the “Top 10 Bridges” in the World. The bridge is considered the “flag bridge” of

Precast Chainwall & Telecommunications Building Installation

This installation of a precast concrete chainwall and shelter was completed within 1 hour, thus saving the owner over 2 weeks in construction. The cost of the precast wall is less expensive than the traditional cast-in-place or steel platform.
