Virtual Report from Woodstock Fair
What's better than celebrating a seventh birthday with your twin sister?
How about celebrating it with an elephant ride and a few spins on the tilt-a-whirl at the Woodstock Fair.
Evan and Avery Charneski Friday walked through the crowded fairgrounds with their mother, Kim, a Killingly native who attended the fair regularly as a child.
"It was such a great experience coming here when I was young," she said. "And now I get to do it with my kids. That's so amazing."
Thousands of visitors flocked to opening day of the 149-year-old fair, which runs through Monday. They quickly filled up parking lots on their way to animal exhibits, midway rides and food booths.
Ice cream and bottled water vendors did a brisk business. Hungry guests loaded up on thick sausage sandwiches, sizzling vegetable tempura and sugar-dusted fried dough.
The whoops and screams coming from carnival ride passengers faded a bit near the agricultural tents, where the pungent aroma of beef cattle and freshly shorn sheep reigned. Bob Guillot, owner of Twin Brook Farms in Putnam, looked over his seven cows housed inside one of the exhibition barns.
"I've been coming here for at least 25 years, and now my grandchildren are showing animals," he said. "It's a chance to connect with old friends and sell a few cows."
