Spaghetti Junction, Aston, Birmingham, England. Gravelly Hill Interchange, better known by its nickname Spaghetti Junction, is junction 6 of the M6 motorway where it meets the A38(M) Aston Expressway in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Its colloquial name of “Spaghetti Junction” was coined in the 1970s by Roy Smith, a journalist from the Birmingham Evening Mail. It provides access to and from the A38 (Tyburn Road), A38 (M) (Aston Expressway), the A5127 (Lichfield Road/Gravelly Hill), and several unclassified local roads. Construction started in 1968 and the junction was opened in November 1972 by the then environment secretary Peter Walker. The opening had been scheduled for the start of the year but was delayed, according to contemporary reports, by “box girder inspections”. In an unusual meeting of old and new transport technology, the pillars supporting the flyovers over the Birmingham Canal Navigations had to be carefully placed to enable a horse-drawn canal boat to pass under the interchange without fouling the towing rope. The junction has undergone major repair work several times since, due to the very heavy traffic through the junction, and some alleged cost-saving measures during its construction. In November 2007, a sliproad running from the Tyburn Road onto the Aston Expressway was closed to undergo urgent repair works. - This home movie starts with a great fashion footage. The woman in the movie is wearing a pink and white 1950’s style dress with a full skirt and wrap. The couple gets into a classic car and drives off into the sunset. The movie then switches to see a baby taking his fist steps and then a nice family picture of all the kids. Next, we see great footage of that great summer activity of kinds running through sprinklers. We see footage of the beach. Check out those classic swimsuits! I am not sure what kind of farm equipment in depicted in the next scene, but the landscape us beautiful. It looks like a mountain terrain, similar to that of the grand canyon. Finally, it looks like we’re headed to Las Vegas. The wonderful old road side attractions used to be a staple in family road trips. This footage looks like it shows Dunes Auto with a statue in front of the sign, as well as several other road side stops. There is some very interesting footage at the end of this movie and I am not sure what industrial process this depicts. This movie was taken around 1957 or 58. I am the baby in this and am now 49. Total Precast Solutions - New School Construction - A Designer's Perspective
PCI Central Region put on a series of Precast Concrete seminars over a 5 week period in Indianapolis (4.21.09), Cincinnati (4.22.09), Detroit (4.29.09) and Pittsburgh (5.6.09). As part of these seminars, there was a session on Precast for Educational facilities, which Roberts Academy was used as a case study as a fully Precast solution. Randal Merrill, Vice President of Architecture of MSP, was asked to be a guest speaker at the events in Cincinnati, Detroit and Pittsburgh. Randal teamed with John Ciulis, PE, President of National Precast (Detroit) in making these presentations. Randal was able to share his experiences in designing two schools (Robert Academy and Academy of World Languages) for CPS utilizing a Total Precast product as a creative design solution. PCI recorded these sessions and added an in-depth interview with Randal and prepared a video that they now use in marketing and educating owners and architects about the potential advantages of using Precast concrete systems as a viable design options for a variety of building types.
